About this tour
This session covers two of Venice's great painting collections, Tintoretto at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Titian at the Basilica dei Frari next door. You hear about the Crucifixion and ceiling inside the scuola from the campo outside, then step into the working basilica to see Titian's Assumption and Canova's pyramid tomb. Church interiors are filmed as normal for the Frari part of the walk.
After the sound check, the guide moves from the scuola's exterior into the basilica, pausing at each major work for your questions, with notes from a painting conservator included along the way. A short list of what was covered is sent afterwards.
This suits anyone with a serious interest in Venetian painting, from the dramatic to the more restrained.

Outside the scuola, the guide describes Tintoretto's Crucifixion in the Sala dell'Albergo inside, and the trick, still used by visitors today, of viewing the packed upper hall ceiling with a hand mirror.

Titian's Assumption at the Frari 21 min
Inside the basilica, the camera looks up at Titian's Assumption over the high altar, and the guide explains how the painting was designed to be seen from the length of the nave.

Canova's tomb 21 min
Still inside the Frari, the guide walks to Canova's pyramid-shaped tomb and shares notes from a conservator who worked on cleaning the church's paintings.

Time to ask anything about Venice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cicchetti and Cannaregio, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
