About this tour

This session walks Naschmarkt, Vienna's oldest food market, into the quieter streets of the Freihausviertel beyond it. You see a Käsekrainer sausage coming off the grill and a Wiener Schnitzel served inside a small Beisl. It also covers the Saturday flea market that sets up at one end of the market when it runs.

The guide opens with a sound check at the market entrance, then moves stall by stall before crossing into the Freihausviertel. You can ask about specific dishes, the market's history or the neighbourhood as the walk goes on. A short list of stalls and the Beisl visited is sent on afterwards.

This suits anyone planning a food-focused day in Vienna who wants the market mapped out first. It also suits former visitors who only ever walked through Naschmarkt without knowing what lay behind it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Vienna before heading out.

  2. Naschmarkt stalls 21 min

The camera moves along Naschmarkt, Vienna's oldest market, past barrels of pickles and trays of Balkan burek stacked at a corner stall. The guide explains how the market has run for over a kilometre since the nineteenth century.

  3. A Würstelstand 21 min

At a Würstelstand the camera watches a Käsekrainer come off the grill, cheese already bubbling out of the sausage skin. The guide explains what separates a Käsekrainer from other sausages sold at the same stand.

  4. Freihausviertel and a Beisl 21 min

In the Freihausviertel the camera looks in at a Beisl, a small neighbourhood restaurant, where a Wiener Schnitzel is plated for a table. The guide explains what makes the district different from the market outside and mentions the Saturday flea market when it runs.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Vienna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sachertorte and Innere Stadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
