About this tour

This session moves between two eras of Warsaw food, from a milk bar serving the same canteen dishes since 1960 to the restored Hala Koszyki market hall and a young chef's modern Polish bistro. The guide explains how milk bars survived the change of system and what a new generation of cooks is doing with the same ingredients. It is a walk between old and new Warsaw food culture.

The call opens with a sound check, then moves between the four stops from canteen to market hall to bistro, with time for questions about how each place has changed. A short list of addresses follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone curious about how Polish food has changed since communism, or anyone who enjoys comparing old and new food cultures. It also works well around a mealtime at home.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Warsaw before heading out.

  2. A milk bar from 1960 21 min

Inside a milk bar that has served the same kind of canteen food since 1960, the camera watches pierogi and barszcz go out on plastic trays, and the guide explains how these state-subsidised canteens survived the change of system.

  3. Hala Koszyki food hall 21 min

Inside the restored Hala Koszyki market hall, the guide points out how the original early twentieth-century structure was kept while the stalls inside were replaced with newer kitchens and bars.

  4. Pączki bakery 21 min

At a bakery known across the city for its pączki, the guide watches trays come out of the fryer and explains what separates a good one from an ordinary doughnut.

  5. A modern Polish bistro 21 min

The walk ends outside a small bistro run by a young chef reworking Polish classics into small plates, where the guide points out a jug of kompot and a bottle of Polish craft cider on the counter inside.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Warsaw: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Żurek (sour rye soup) and Śródmieście, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Warsaw time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
