Palace of Culture and Science, from the ground up
Highlights
- A 1950s gift with a complicated history
- Modern Warsaw, built around a landmark
- Mixed feelings, explained honestly
- The tower, seen from street level
- Poland's tallest building, up close
About this tour
This session looks at the Palace of Culture and Science from street level, covering its history as a 1950s gift from the Soviet Union and the modern city that has grown up around it. You see the tower's base first, then the plaza and surrounding streets. It is a look at a building's complicated place in Warsaw's identity.
We start at the base with a short sound check, then move across the plaza to take in the surrounding streets. I explain the building's history and the debates around it as we go, taking questions throughout.
It suits anyone interested in twentieth-century political history or how a city relates to a controversial landmark. It also pairs well with an evening session on the same tower lit up.

The camera opens at street level looking up at the tower, and I explain its history as a gift from the Soviet Union in the 1950s and the mixed feelings it still provokes.
-
Surrounding plaza 21 min
We move across the plaza around the building, and you see how modern Warsaw has grown up around a structure many people once wanted removed.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bigos and Śródmieście, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
