About this tour

This call maps out Viking-age York across the streets that still carry traces of it today, from the settlement's likely boundary to street names with Scandinavian endings. You see how much of the period survives in the city's layout rather than only in a museum case. I explain how archaeologists pieced the boundary together.

We start with a sound check near the boundary line, then move to a nearby street sign, taking questions as they come up. I send a short list of street names and their meanings afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in archaeology or place names. It also pairs well with the Coppergate street-level call.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of York before heading out.

  2. Settlement boundary 15 min

You see roughly where the Viking-age settlement's boundary is thought to have run, and I explain how archaeologists worked that out from what was dug up.

  3. Surviving street name 15 min

The camera turns to a nearby street sign, and I point out how many of the city's street names still carry a Scandinavian ending from that period.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about York: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Micklegate, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
