Maksimir Park, from the entrance to the old zoo grounds
Highlights
- One of the region's earliest public parks
- Birds nesting well inside the city limits
- Zoo enclosures fitted into existing woodland
- A lake reached partway through a longer walk
- Zagreb's greener side, away from the old town
About this tour
This session follows Maksimir Park from its entrance pavilion to the lake and finally the perimeter of the zoo set within the woodland. You see one of the region's earliest public parks, birds nesting well inside the city limits, and enclosures built into existing trees rather than cleared ground. It stays inside the park boundary throughout.
I keep a steady pace between the three stops, slow down at the lake since the birds reward patience, and take questions at any point along the route.
This suits anyone who wants a longer, greener session away from the old town. It also suits families or anyone travelling with children interested in the zoo.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Zagreb before heading out.
-
Maksimir Entrance Pavilion 21 min
You see the pavilion near the main entrance, and I explain how this park was laid out among the first public parks of its kind in this part of Europe.
-
The Park Lake 21 min
The camera reaches the lake further along the main path, and I point out birds that nest here despite the park sitting well within the city.
-
Zoo Perimeter 21 min
We finish along the fencing of the city zoo inside the park, and I describe how the enclosures were fitted into the existing woodland rather than built on cleared ground.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Zagreb: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Štrukli and Upper Town, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Zagreb time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
