Manuel Heredia

My family has lived in the caves of the Sacromonte for at least five generations. My great-grandfather played guitar for the visitors who came up the hill in the 1920s, my aunt still sings in a zambra on the Camino del Sacromonte, and I grew up hearing flamenco through the walls. I trained as a carpenter, fixed doors and windows in the Albaicín for ten years and got to know every courtyard behind them. In 2013 a neighbour who ran a hostel asked me to show her guests around, and I have been guiding ever since. On my walks you see the Albaicín the way the people who live there see it: the cármenes with their walled gardens, the Moorish cisterns still standing in the small squares, the viewpoint of San Nicolás before the crowds arrive.
